Glenrothes Single Speyside Malt Skotsk Whisky
In 1868, James Davidson sold his Macallan distillery to James Stuart. In 1875, James Stuart formed a partnership with Robert Dick, William Grant, both agents of the Caledonian Bank in Rothes, and John Cruickshank, a solicitor from Elgin, Moray. The four men established the firm of James Stuart & Co to improve the Macallan distillery. In 1878, they decided to build a new distillery in Rothes, Moray, however the development was threatened by the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank.
Generally available as the Glenrothes Select Reserve and year vintages the distillery style is;
Nose: Big and bold. Fruity, spicy, raisins and sultanas, sherry.

1878 – James Stuart & Co., licensees of Macallan since 1868, begins planning a new distillery in Rothes. Robert Dick, William Grant and John Cruickshank are partners in the company. Stuart has financial problems so Dick, Grant and Cruickshank terminate the partnership, form William Grant & Co. and continue the building of the distillery in Rothes.
1879 – Production starts in May.
1884 – The distillery changes name to Glenrothes-Glenlivet.
1887 – William Grant & Co. joins forces with Islay Distillery Co. (owners of Bunnahabhain Distillery) and forms Highland Distillers Company.
1897 – A fire ravages the distillery in December.
1898 – Capacity doubles.
1903 – An explosion causes substantial damage.
1963 – Expansion from four to six stills.
1980 – Expansion from six to eight stills.
1989 – Expansion from eight to ten stills.
1999 – Edrington and William Grant & Sons buy Highland Distillers.
2002 – Four single cask malts from 1966 and 1967 are launched.
2005 – A 30 year old is launched together with Select Reserve and Vintage 1985.
2006 – 1994 and 1975 Vintage are launched.
2007 – A 25 year old is released as a duty free item.
2008 – 1978 Vintage and Robur Reserve are launched.
2009 – The Glenrothes John Ramsay, two vintages (1988 and 1998), Alba Reserve and Three Decades are released.
2010 – Berry Brothers takes over the brand while Edrington remains owner of the distillery.
