James Stuart a local corn merchant with distilling interests in the Macallan distillery at Craigellachie established the Glen Spey distillery in 1885.

1878 – James Stuart & Co. founds the distillery which becomes known by the name Mill of Rothes.
1886 – James Stuart buys Macallan.
1887 – W. & A. Gilbey buys the distillery for £11,000 thus becoming the first English company to buy a Scottish malt distillery.
1920 – A fire breaks out.
1962 – W. & A. Gilbey combines forces with United Wine Traders and forms International Distillers & Vintners (IDV).
1970 – The stills are increased from two to four.
1972 – IDV is bought by Watney Mann who is then acquired by Grand Metropolitan.
1997 – Guiness and Grand Metropolitan merge to form Diageo.
2001 – A 12 year old is launched in the Flora & Fauna series.
2010 – A 21 year old is released as part of the Special Releases and a 1996 Manager´s Choice single cask is launched.
